At an altitude of 2,702 meters , at the foot of the Col du Tour Noir and facing the Trient Plateau, the Albert 1er refuge is one of the most iconic mountain huts in the Chamonix Mont-Blanc valley . Built in 1930 and named in honor of the Belgian mountaineering king, it overlooks the Tour Glacier and offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in the Alps. The hike to the Albert 1er refuge is a must for lovers of high mountains—accessible to experienced hikers, challenging but profoundly rewarding.

The Albert 1er refuge: a pinnacle of alpine heritage

Managed by the French Alpine Club , the Albert 1er refuge is the gateway to the Tour glacier and the Trient plateau. A historic base camp for mountaineers setting out to conquer the Aiguille du Tour, the Tour Noir or the Chardonnet, it also welcomes thousands of hikers each summer who come simply to contemplate the high mountains — without ropes or ice axes.

  • Altitude : 2m
  • Built : 1930, enlarged several times
  • Named in homage to Albert I, King of the Belgians, a passionate mountaineer
  • Guard June to September (depending on snow conditions)
  • Capacity approximately 140 seats (booking highly recommended)

The route: ascend to the Albert 1er refuge from Le Tour

The departure is from the hamlet of Le Tour (1,462 m), at the very end of the Chamonix valley, accessible by car or valley bus from the Hotel Jeu de Paume to Lavancher (only 15 minutes). From there, two options for the ascent:

  • On foot from the bottom 4 hours of ascent, 1,240 m of elevation gain — the purist's option
  • With the Tour gondola lift + the Autannes chairlift up to the Col de Balme (reduces the elevation gain), then traverse to the refuge — approximately 2 hours 30 minutes

The main route passes by Lake Charamillon and then climbs steadily through high-altitude pastures and the first rocky terrain. The views of the Tour Glacier, the Aiguille du Chardonnet, and the Aiguilles Rouges are breathtaking throughout the ascent.

At the Albert 1er refuge: welcome, meals and overnight stay at altitude

Upon arriving at the Albert 1er refuge, the warm welcome from the wardens is part of the experience. The mountain cuisine—hearty, traditional, and Savoyard—is a fitting reward for the effort. Soups, savory tarts, stews, homemade desserts: you eat well, share, and chat with other hikers and climbers.

The sunset over the Tour glacier is one of the most beautiful sights in the Alps. And in the morning, the rosy dawn over the Chardonnet rewards those who have spent the night there in a dormitory.

Excursions departing from the Albert 1er refuge

For experienced mountaineers, the Albert 1er refuge provides access to magnificent ice and mixed climbing routes:

  • Aiguille du Tour (3,540 m) — the classic route, accessible to supervised beginner mountaineers
  • Tour noir (3,836 m) — demanding mixed climbing
  • Little Fork et Head of White — accessible glacier hikes with a guide
  • Trient Plateau — crossing to Switzerland for the most experienced
  • Tour of the Tour Glacier — spectacular loop alpine hike

If you are not self-sufficient in the high mountains, we recommend that you hire a guide from the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix to experience these adventures in complete safety.
